History & Mission
The Traffic Unit was formed in 2009 after the Sheriff’s Office was awarded a 3-year Traffic Safety Grant from the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program. The grant funded the majority of the costs of starting the program with continued funding throughout a 3 year grant period. Sgt. Jason Moore currently holds the only position within the unit and is tasked with the enforcement of all motor vehicle laws. Though enforcement is a major part of the unit’s responsibility, the overall goal is increased safety for the motoring public through increased enforcement to raise awareness and educate the public about traffic safety. Statistically, speed, inattention of drivers (texting and cell phone use), impaired drivers and inexperienced drivers contribute heavily to the number of motor vehicle crashes and fatalities in Alexander County and North Carolina as a whole. It is the goal of the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit to reduce these numbers and make the roads in Alexander County safer for everyone. Remember, together we can help keep Alexander County roads safer!
